About Juneteenth
Although the Emancipation Proclamation of September 22, 1862 officially abolished slavery in the United States beginning January 1, 1863, it was not until June 19, 1865 that the Union army descended on Galveston, TX, one of the last great and defiant strongholds against what America truly stands for, to fully enforce this Executive Order.
First celebrated in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1866, Juneteenth, also known as Black Independence Day or Freedom Day, has evolved into a day of celebration of freedom in several countries around the world.
